We are always looking for new and fun ways to grow our orchids. Our Terracotta Mounting Jars have been a great success for us to grow them mounted and we are excited to now offer these Terracotta Plant Pockets.
These are created by our friend Abby at Coldbrooke Pottery. Each piece is carefully handcrafted with the wonderful details shown here before being fired. A patina is applied to highlight the details and beauty of each piece. They have a generous open “pocket” at the bottom which allows plenty of space for growing smaller orchids. We simply wrap the roots loosely with moistened New Zealand Sphagnum Moss and slide the plant down into the pocket. We then carefully push moss up from the bottom of the pocket to fill any remaining open spaces.
These are a fantastic way to grow a great variety of smaller sized orchids such as Pleurothallis, Lepanthopsis, Scaphosepalum, Lepanthes and Stellis. We have also had great success with some of the smaller cattleya species with roots that love to attach to the terracotta and climb up the decorative back. Shown here is Pleurothallis stricta in decorative fern pocket and Scaphosepalum microdactylum in the tree bark pocket.
Because each is hand crafted details and sizes will vary slightly.
